Tango in Layers
Coming Soon
The transient nature of music and dance contributes to their mystique. This impermanence, however, is a source of difficulty for learning. We hear the same sounds, but what exactly is the “musical” dancer listening to?
In Tango in Layers we solved this by colliding expertise in Argentine Tango dance & music with computational musicology & visualization. We peeled apart musical performances into musical data; these 0-and-1s were then re-synthesized.
What comes out of this arduous process is newfound abilities to hear each instrument in isolation or combination with any other, at any speed; see the music as annotated illustrations that shows what “musical dancers” listen, and additionally as sheet music arrangements for the instrument players.
This one-of-a-kind collection is an invaluable resource for students and teachers of Tango and music aficionados.
